WNC visit to Ofiomina Ama Alakiri on Oil Spillage and Pollution

On behalf of Wakirike National Congress through the Directorate of Environmental and Natural Resources, we recently conducted an environmental assessment and fact-finding trip to Ofiomina Ama Alakiri in response to the community’s plea for assistance amidst devastating oil pollution. The findings were alarming, revealing widespread contamination of land, water, and air, causing immense harm to the environment and public health.

We witnessed oil-soaked soil, waterways, and vegetation, as well as alarming levels of air pollution. Local residents shared heart-wrenching stories of illness, displacement, and economic hardship due to the pollution.

We call on The Federal Government, State Government, NNPCL and any other Stakeholders to take immediate action to:

1. Clean up the pollution
2. Provide adequate compensation to affected communities
3. Implement measures to prevent future oil spills
4. Ensure access to basic human rights, including clean water, healthcare, and a safe environment

We stand in solidarity with the people of Ofiomina Ama Alakiri and commit to supporting their fight for environmental justice and sustainable development.

Dr. Gordon Tami Amangabara,

Director, Environmental and Natural Resources.
